Neurologic Music Therapy® services for the greater Dallas area

WELCOME! I'm Elizabeth Rose, and I've been working as a board-certified music therapist for almost 20 years leading memory care groups for skilled nursing facility residents, providing hospice and palliative care, and working with individuals living with neurological diagnoses. My services focus on using music therapy to help people reach goals that will improve their daily lives. Sessions are provided in-home or in the facility where clients reside for ease of accessibility.WE ALL KNOW that music can be a uniquely motivating force for change, expression, movement, the list goes on...NEUROLOGIC MUSIC THERAPY® is a system of research-driven techniques which uses MUSIC to help people achieve their functional, non-musical goals. Music is processed all over the brain, and even when certain areas are damaged or work differently, the way the brain perceives music can help us to re-wire or strengthen neural pathways. No previous musical experience is required to benefit.NMT SESSIONS are customized to each individual and can be focused on a combination of:
Sensorimotor Goals (gait training, range of motion, balance, grip)
Speech and Language Goals (speech production, communication)
Cognition Goals (attention, memory, executive functioning)
WHAT DOES NMT LOOK LIKE? Each session is designed with the client’s individualized goals in mind. Someone with aphasia due to a stroke may be using a singing-based NMT technique (Melodic Intonation Therapy) to relearn specific spoken phrases. Another technique using adapted instrument playing (Therapeutic Instrumental Music Performance®) can improve grip strength and fine motor skills, increase someone’s range of motion, or strengthen muscles needed for standing or walking.A person with dementia may benefit from the use of singing familiar music to induce associated memories and encourage speech. Rhythmic exercises with simple handheld percussion instruments help with attention goals (Musical Attention Control Training). And guided, rhythmic movement to music not only helps maintain strength and range of motion, but is also proven to stimulate brain activity and improve cognition. And these are just a few examples. The changing needs of each client are considered when designing a treatment plan.WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM NMT? People diagnosed with a range of neurological conditions including Alzheimer's and other dementias, stroke, Parkinson's, Autism, Huntington's, and Acquired Brain Injury. Neurologic music therapists often work on similar goals to physical, speech, or occupational therapists, but using music and rhythm-based interventions. Please contact me for a FREE consultation to see how NMT can help.[email protected]
